Quality Assurance Training

A beagle, a barn cat, and a Quality Tech walk into a bar. Each gets a 4 oz drink in an 8 oz glass.

The beagle says, “My glass is half full.”
The barn cat says, “My glass is half empty.”
The Quality Tech says...

The Customized Training Department at the Lunenburg Campus of NSCC offers a variety of training related to Quality Assurance. While this training is primarily targeted toward improving quality in a manufacturing environment, it also helps develop leadership skills and improve quality in service environments.

Among the quality assurance training offerings that I am involved in are:

  • CQT Preparation
  • Continuous Improvement Processes for MLCP
  • Quality Awareness for AiTP
  • Quality Improvement for the Workplace

I was given the opportunity to take my ASQ CQT course through the NSCC. Suzie was our instructor for several modules including a math refresher course and statistical process control. ...She was certainly a key factor in successfully achieving my ASQ CQT certification. Read more ...

I’m a Certified Quality Technician and member of the Human  Development and Leadership Division of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). You can learn more about Quality and certifications by visiting the ASQ website.

For information and schedules on any of these offerings, please contact the Customized Training Department of NSCC.

CQT Preparation

This Quality Assurance program is developed to help each  participant prepare to become certified as a Quality Technician (CQT) by the American Society for Quality (ASQ). This extensive training program includes a math refresher, quality concepts, statistics, auditing, blueprint reading, and metrology. The program follows the Body of Knowledge for ASQ certification as a CQT, and the goal is to prepare participants to successfully pass the certification examination.

ASQ certifications are recognized internationally (as well as by employers right here on the South Shore). This training provides a good, solid understanding of the tools and techniques used to assure quality. That understanding will help you become a more effective employee, team member, or leader.

You can learn more about the ASQ and the CQT specialty from the ASQ website.

This program demands considerable commitment from participants, but experiences of past participants demonstrate that the results can make the hard work worthwhile!

 Continuous Improvement Processes

The course on Continuous Improvement Processes is one part of the Manufacturing Leadership Certification Program (MLCP), which is occasionally offered through the Customized Training Department. In this course, quality assurance is approached from the continuous improvement point of view, and it specifically targets the manufacturing environment.

Topics covered include continuous improvement tools and techniques, Statistical Process Control, the Cost of Quality, and Quality Standards (such as ISO 9000).

Quality Awareness for AiTP

Quality Awareness is one part of the AiTP (Aerospace Industry Training Program), which is occasionally offered through the Customized Training Department. As the name implies, this is an introductory course in quality, with an emphasis on examining your current work environment and finding opportunities to improve processes to ensure quality. This course specifically targets the aerospace environment, and takes a descriptive rather than a statistical approach.

Topics covered include the background of the quality movement, such as Dr. Deming’s philosophy and 14 points, the importance of focusing on customers, an introduction to quality tools such as the Pareto principle and the fishbone diagram, quality awards and standards including ISO9000 and the AS9100C, and the meaning of total quality management.

Quality Improvement for the Workplace

The Quality Improvement for the Workplace program is based on the Body of Knowledge for ASQ certification as a Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA). This program takes a more descriptive and less mathematical approach than that offered in the CQT prep program.

The focus of this course is improvement. Improvement at work is everybody’s job, whether you work on the manufacturing floor or in an office. Improvement applies to life outside of work too, and the course content can be helpful for anyone who wants to improve—whether your focus is on yourself or on your company.

You can learn more about the ASQ and the CQIA specialty from the ASQ website.
